Oculus Quest 2 Grows To 35% Of SteamVR Headset Utilization
The Oculus Quest 2 now accounts for over 35% of VR headset usage on Steam.
That number was announced with this month’s update of the Steam Hardware Survey. Quest 2 took another 1.84% of total headset usage last month, increasing to 35.02% of the total.
Meta’s standalone headset was one of the few devices to gain ground in October; Both the HTC Vive Pro and the Pro 2 also made small gains, as did the Windows Mixed Reality devices. But the Valve Index fell slightly to 17.30% while every other Oculus headset continued to decline.
As it stands, meta devices (renamed by Facebook last week) now account for 61.15% of all VR headset usage on Steam. Valve follows with 17.30% and HTC takes 13.68% between the original Vive, Pro and Cosmos headsets. As always, we should point out that the hardware survey is completely optional and not necessarily accurate, but since no VR companies share headset sales, it’s the best we have.
The Varjo Aero SteamVR headset was announced last month, but it won’t arrive on the doorstep until December. Even then, the $ 2,000 price tag means it’s unlikely to take up much of SteamVR’s market share. There’s also an upgraded version of the HP Reverb G2 with better tracking along the way, though it’s unclear exactly when this one will ship.
With no new Oculus hardware due in 2021 and the recently announced Cambria project looking like a much more expensive prospect, the Quest 2 throne is unlikely to be challenged anytime soon.
