Oculus Quest 2 gross sales paused over pores and skin irritation considerations – free insert out there now
Oculus is pausing sales of the Quest 2 VR headset after reports from some users who experienced skin irritation after using the device.
The company is offering Quest 2 owners a free silicone case for the headset’s “foam face interface” but will suspend new sales worldwide until the new accessories are included in all packages.
According to the company, a silicone case is to be enclosed with all new sales by August 24th. The new cover is part of a voluntary recall of the removable foam face interface in the US and Canada.
The company says it is taking action after “a very small percentage of users experience skin irritation with the foam portion of the Quest 2 detachable face surface resting on their skin”.
In an email sent to registered Quest 2 owners on Tuesday, the company gives instructions on how to redeem the insert, which is also said to increase comfort and hygiene.
Oculus says it has been working with regulators on the insert for the past few months and evolving its own manufacturing processes. The replacement should land with Quest 2 owners about a month after redemption.
In a blog post Andrew Bosworth, director of Facebook Reality Labs said, “We took the reports of skin irritation very seriously as soon as we heard about them and we conducted an in-depth investigation, including advice from leading dermatologists,” and toxicologists as of December . These experts have indicated that some parts of the population can experience skin irritation from many household items – even things like tomatoes or shampoo – and that the rates we observed are as expected.
“Our investigation found that our manufacturing process is safe, which means that no unexpected or dangerous contaminants have been found in the foam interface or the Quest 2 manufacturing process.”

As suggested in reports last week, Oculus also says that the 64GB Quest 2 headset will be replaced by a 128GB SKU by default when the headsets go back on sale. The entry level remains unchanged at € 299.
