Facebook said Tuesday that it would temporarily cease sales of the Oculus Quest 2 virtual reality headset because the old foam insert caused facial rashes.

In connection with the Halt, Facebook is giving all customers a new silicone case that goes over the foam insert, and from August 24th, all Quest 2 headsets will be delivered with the silicone case in each box.

“As more and more people came into VR with Quest 2, we received reports that a very small percentage of Quest 2 customers experienced skin irritation after using the detachable foam facial interface that comes with Quest 2 and is also sold separately, including as part of the Fit Pack, ”wrote Andrew Bosworth, director of Facebook Reality Labs, in a blog post announcing the recall.

“While the reporting rate is low and the majority of reported cases are low, we strive to ensure that our products are safe and comfortable for everyone who uses them.”

For those looking to get a free silicone case, Oculus has created a website with step-by-step instructions.

Facebook first received reports of the skin irritation in December 2020, according to The Verge, adding that around 0.01 percent of all users experienced the irritation.

“We took the reports of skin irritation very seriously as soon as we heard about them and carried out an in-depth investigation immediately, including advice from leading dermatologists and toxicologists, beginning December,” added Bosworth.

“These experts have indicated that some parts of the population can experience skin irritation from many household items – even things like tomatoes or shampoo – and that the rates we observed are as expected.”
