Oculus Quest 2 120Hz possibility could solely be restricted to some video games

The Oculus Quest 2 virtual reality headset may have a very fluid refresh rate sooner rather than later – but that doesn’t mean every game can support it.

John Carmack, a veteran gaming legend and CTO of Facebook, spoke about the rumored 120Hz update that will soon land on Quest 2 and set expectations for how far-reaching the update will be.

When asked by Twitter about his confidence that Quest games can run at 120Hz, Carmack replied, “Few existing games are optimized for 120, but some new titles will consider this an option in their design phase.”

Carmack’s statement follows a joke by Andrew ‘Boz’ Bosworth, VP of Facebook Reality Labs, who had previously suggested that a 120Hz mode would come to the headset, which in turn suggested a beta version of Oculus tipster lja Z dated March 2021 .

While the Oculus Quest 2 is one of the best VR headsets we’ve ever tried, Carmack’s words here are to be expected and reasonable. Remember that Quest 2 originally started with a standard refresh rate of 72 Hz. A later update will allow some developers to push their games to a smoother 90 Hz limit last November. 120 Hz refresh rates would be incredibly taxing on the Oculus Quest 2 hardware, and it may not generally be possible to upgrade support for existing games. Instead, games designed from the ground up at 120Hz seem like a safer choice for effective refresh rate support, while those who rock a high-end gaming PC and Oculus Link connection are likely to get that too Increasing the refresh rate could benefit.
