The Oculus Quest 2 is Already the Most Well-liked PC VR Headset

A recent survey shows that, despite being released a few months ago, the Oculus Quest 2 is already the most widely used PC VR headset.

The Oculus Quest 2 is the most widely used PC virtual reality headset in the world today. Despite being released just five months ago, a recent survey clearly showed that Oculus Quest 2 is the go-to address for PC gamers, well ahead of current competitors.

Introduced in October 2020, the Oculus Quest 2 is the direct successor to the company’s original VR headset. Oculus was acquired by Facebook in 2014, which led to the creation of the Oculus Rift. While the Rift requires the use of a powerful PC, the Quest 2 can operate independently thanks to a rugged internal graphics chip, which makes its use much more versatile.

That versatility (and overall quality) paid off hugely, according to Steam’s February hardware survey. The survey data shows that 22.91% of the headsets used on SteamVR are the Oculus Quest 2, which slightly overshadows other models like the HTC Vive and the platform’s own Valve Index headset. Further data shows how dominant Oculus VR systems are. The brand’s combined models make up more than half of all devices used on SteamVR. Facebook itself has stated that sales for the Oculus Quest 2 were “above expectations”, with monthly active users already exceeding the original Quest. The devices have proven so popular that the Oculus Quest 2 was completely sold out from 2020 inventory during the holiday season, a fate that basically all new gaming systems have suffered from in recent months.

The Oculus Quest 2 is likely to become even more popular in the future. While Facebook initially offered a refresh rate of 72 Hz (like the original Quest model), it increased its display capacity to 90 Hz last November. Now the company seems to be taking it a step further with the news that the Oculus Quest 2 is expected a refresh rate update of 120 Hz will soon be obtained. This would equate the VR device with the valve index, which also offers 120 Hz. The biggest factor why the Quest 2 is knocking out the competition is likely to be based on its price. The index has a high price tag of $ 999, more than three times the Quest 2 amount of $ 300.

The runaway success of the VR headset shows the growing presence and popularity of virtual reality and augmented reality technology. For example, Microsoft recently unveiled its impressive Mesh AR technology that aims to combine augmented and virtual realities into one seamless application. The technology enables holographic avatars to interact with objects that appear in physical spaces, known as “holoporation”. Even in its early days, the technology has had an absolutely massive impact on the VR gaming industry as it evolves.

Oculus is poised to be a leader in the VR gaming industry for the years to come. The Oculus Quest games make a ton of money. Over 60 titles generate over $ 1 million and six more generate over $ 10 million. For gamers, it will certainly be exciting to see how the technology develops in the coming years.
