The bottom Oculus Quest 2 may get a shock improve
The Oculus Quest 2 is available in two versions: a 64 GB basic version for £ 299 or a 256 GB model for an additional £ 100.
Getting a version with more built-in storage can feel like an important future-proof option as the installation sizes of VR content keep growing. And it seems Facebook has the same feeling, as the company is reportedly ditching the 64GB model and replacing it with a more generous 128GB version.
The word comes from the French website GamerGen, which discovered a listing for a 128 GB model at retailers LDLC and its subsidiary Top Achat. Interestingly, when asked for confirmation by GamerGen via Twitter, Top Achat initially claimed this was not a mistake. The translated tweet reads, “So I checked, it’s not a bug or a leak. It went online on July 6th at 12:01 am after the NDA ended. The 64 GB model is now out of stock, the 128 GB model replaces it. “
The lists for the new SKU have since been removed from the internet, but the Way Back Machine has the evidence. A price of € 350 is the MSRP of the current 64GB model, which suggests it’s a direct replacement rather than a new mid-range.
There are certainly good reasons for more storage space, although personally I haven’t had any real problems with my Oculus Quest 2. Most VR games stay under 3GB, although there are notable exceptions. The Walking Dead: Saints and Sinners takes up a massive 8.39GB of storage, and you can imagine that game sizes are only going up and developers are getting more ambitious on hardware.
Anything that means Oculus Quest 2 owners will have to spend less time juggling content is certainly welcome, although we certainly hope that Facebook will just bite the bullet and bring microSD card support into the Oculus Quest 3.
