The best way to Arrange A number of Accounts on Oculus Quest 2
The Oculus Quest 2, like most standalone VR headsets, is very socially designed – and we’re not just talking about multiplayer games. The headset’s wireless nature allows you to bring it to gatherings and bring friends and family to the wonders of virtual reality. The only real downside is that the Quest series only supports a single login so far. This means that anyone using your headset can download new apps, access your Facebook messages, and destroy your Beat Saber high scores completely.
However, that will change. Oculus introduced support for multiple accounts and library sharing as an experimental feature in its latest software update for Oculus Quest 2 users. It allows up to four accounts on a single headset, each with its own apps, high scores and social accounts. It’s a game changer for social VR, and we have the information on how to set it up here.
How to set up multi-user assistance for Oculus Quest 2
- Go to the Settings menu on your headset (click the gear on the toolbar).
- Go to About and click Update Software if an update is available.
- When your headset is up to date, return to the Settings menu and select Experimental Features. Scroll down and turn on “Multiple Accounts and Library Sharing”.
- Confirm your selection and activate library sharing.
- Select Account and then Add New Account.
- If your quest doesn’t have a lock pattern set up, you’ll be asked to set one. This is required to support multiple users.
- Click Add New Account and follow the initial setup instructions to link the user’s account to their Facebook account.
- Repeat the process for two more accounts, if necessary, and increase the maximum number of user accounts to 4 – including your own.
Once you’ve set up the other accounts, you can easily switch by selecting your profile photo in the toolbar and choosing the new user.
All sub-users also have access to the admin’s app library, so you don’t have to buy your favorite titles again – for the most part, anyway. Oculus announced that any new app released on or after February 19, 2021 will include app sharing support by default. However, it can take a while for older apps to support functionality. So make sure your apps are up to date!
Can I set up multi-user support for the original Oculus Quest?
As mentioned, the current experimental beta is limited to the more powerful Oculus Quest 2, but Oculus has specifically stated that it will make it to the original Quest at some point. Hopefully, when it comes to bringing out the fully baked feature, Oculus will work well with the first generation Quest too.
Can I share apps between headsets?
Let’s say you have a large library of apps and you added a roommate as a user. Then could your roommate access your app library on their own headset just like they would when using yours? Unfortunately not – Oculus specifically states that sub-accounts “cannot access the administrator account’s shared apps through their own headset”.
