Overlook Oculus Quest 2: An Oculus Quest Professional could possibly be on the best way
The Oculus Quest 2 is only five months old, but Facebook may already be thinking of a souped-up version: the Oculus Quest Pro.
The company’s vice president of augmented and virtual reality, Andrew Bosworth, pointed out the existence of Oculus during an Instagram Ask Me Anything (AMA) session on anything related to Oculus. To a comment from a user asking for a $ 600 headset with advanced specs, Bosworth replied, “Quest Pro, what? Interesting, ”says UploadVR before blinking at the camera.
It’s far from an official announcement, let alone a full list of the Oculus Quest Pro specs, but at least that suggests this is something Facebook is thinking about.
While the Oculus Quest 2 is by far the most convenient way to play brilliant VR titles like Beat Saber and Superhot – thanks to its all-in-one design with no PC or standalone cameras – it still is in terms of performance on the weak side. The Snapdragon XR2 chip that powers it is a significant improvement over the original Quest, but Qualcomm says their Snapdragon 888 (as found in the Samsung Galaxy S21) has a GPU that is 35% more powerful.
Part of the appeal of the Oculus Quest family is, of course, the headset’s ability to play more sophisticated titles over the Oculus Link cable and a gaming PC. Even so, the prospect of a pro version is exciting, provided developers feel compelled to upgrade their existing Oculus titles to take full advantage of the theoretical benefits.
This wasn’t the only interesting revelation from the AMA. When asked about the gaze tracking capability at Quest, Bosworth said the technology is “something we’ll be building into a future headset,” adding that it “can dramatically improve performance by only rendering things that are in the field of view of the fovea. “
Perhaps Bosworth was inevitably asked about the recently announced PSVR 2 as well. “I’m definitely glad they are doing one,” he said. “PSVR has been a huge success and a huge place to make money for our developers, and I hope PSVR 2 is too.”
Indeed, the fact that two companies the size of Facebook and Sony seem committed to the future of VR is a great insurance policy for developers, and the best VR games have already hit PS4 and Oculus Quest. VR experiences like Beat Saber, The Walking Dead: Saints and Sinners, Pistol Whip, Arizona Sunshine, Job Simulator, Rec Room and Superhot were hit on both platforms.
