Oculus Quest 2 Passes 30% Of SteamVR Utilization

Facebook’s Oculus Quest 2 now makes up 31.07% of VR headsets used on Steam.

That number was announced this weekend when Valve updated its monthly Steam hardware survey to reflect the bugs released in early July. Quest 2 grew 0.95% on the platform last month (May results here); Users can access SteamVR content by either connecting the device to their PC with a USB cable or using Facebook’s recently launched AirLink wireless feature.

Headsets with near or over 1% SteamVR market share

Meanwhile, HTC’s newly released Vive Pro 2 made its debut on the platform with 0.08% of total headset usage. That’s less than the Valve Index’s 0.19% increase, and even the 0.12% increase in the original HTC Vive. On the other hand, at $ 799 for the headset alone and $ 1,399 for the full kit with controllers and trackers, the Vive Pro 2 is an expensive proposition.

Which is likely another bug: Valve reports that 1.86% of Steam users used a VR headset in June, significantly less than 2.31% in May and much less than it has been for some time. It’s possible that the excitement of E3 2021 has brought more non-VR users to Steam than normal, but it seems far more likely that another fix is due. We will update this article if it does.

VR headsets on Steam

Facebook headsets accounted for 60.24% of the VR headsets used on Steam in June, with Valve 16.7% and HTC 15.2%. By and large, it’s all about the same numbers we’ve seen over the past few months.

With no major VR headsets in sight for the rest of the year right now, don’t expect any massive changes in these results in the next few months.
