Oculus Quest 2 killer improve simply confirmed by Fb
The Oculus Quest 2 could get a big upgrade in the form of a 120Hz refresh rate, which should provide a smoother virtual reality experience.
TechRadar reported that Andrew ‘Boz’ Bosworth, vice president at Facebook Reality Labs, gave a thumbs up – literally – in a Q&A on Instagram when asked if the Oculus Quest 2 would get an upgrade to a 120Hz refresh rate becomes.
The Oculus Quest 2 currently has a refresh rate of 90 Hz after a software update last year that improved the refresh rate of 72 Hz.
This delivers a reasonably comfortable VR experience. In fact, the Quest 2 is our top pick on our list of the best VR headsets. However, boosting it to 120Hz would make things even smoother and potentially circumvent some motion sickness issues that wearing VR headsets for long periods of time can cause for some people.
The Oculus Quest 2 already supports a refresh rate of 120 Hz, but requires VR apps and games to run at 120 frames per second. Since the Quest 2 is an all-in-one VR headset based on a Qualcomm Snapdragon system on a chip rather than a powerful external gaming PC, such frame rates can be a burden for the Quest 2 be.
Even so, it seems that 120 Hz apps could find their way to Quest 2. These could sacrifice graphic fidelity in order to achieve the high frame rates required for a good game at 120 Hz. But for some, the smoother experience might be worth the tradeoff.
A combination of a software update and Facebook pushing developers to create 120Hz compatible apps is likely to be key to opening up that higher update rate for Quest 2.
However, we have no indication of when such a feature would be activated. It could even happen that 120 Hz is withheld for an Oculus Quest 3. However, with Quest 2 already supporting the refresh rate, we see no reason Facebook wouldn’t enable it, especially since Quest 3 is likely still a few years away.
