Oculus Quest 2 is getting a serious improve quickly — can VR video games deal with it?
Facebook gave the thumbs up to update its hugely successful Oculus Quest 2 with an even higher update rate from the November update. The question is, can apps and games for the VR headset handle this?
Facebook has confirmed (via RoadToVR) that it is working on updating the Quest 2 with a refresh rate of 120Hz. This is an amazing upgrade from its original 72 Hz on first launch. Currently it can pump 90 Hz thanks to a more recent update. This means that the VR headset can reach 120 Hz right from the start.
However, there are many reasons we’re only seeing one upgrade now. The main attraction of the Oculus Quest 2 is that no VR-enabled laptop or rig is required to play VR games as it is a mobile headset with a battery life of around 2 hours. Bringing 120 Hz can mean a significant drop in the battery if it is not connected to a PC.
At the same time, VR games and apps had to be created at 120 FPS, which not many have for Oculus Quest 2. However, this means that developers now have a choice of making games that can run up to 120Hz. Smoother frame rates mean less motion sickness, and that’s always good news for our vertigo.
While there is no word on when the software update will unleash the potential of Quest 2, users can rest assured that it will be expected soon as it is the popular headset that was launched in October and is only just beginning should be updated in November.
Facebook has high hopes for the Oculus Quest 2, which is one of the best VR headsets out there today.
Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg also confirmed that the company continues to work on new hardware that “somehow fits the same platform as Quest 2”. Although no official name is given for the new device, Zuckerberg mentioned that the “content that works on Quest 2 should be forward compatible.” Is anyone listening to Quest 3? It could be time to invest in one of the best VR-ready laptops out there.
