How Good is the Anker Charging Dock for Oculus Quest 2?
The Oculus Quest 2 is a great virtual reality device that works great on its own. However, you still need to charge it to keep the battery running while you play. The Oculus Quest 2 has a USB-C port on the left side of the headset and a USB-C cable for charging the device. When you buy a link cable for the Quest 2, you can actually charge the headset through your PC. However, it won’t charge 100% if you try to use the headset while it is charging. However, there is another way to wirelessly charge your Quest 2 as well as its controllers. Introducing the Anker All-In-One Charging Dock for Oculus Quest 2! With this dock you can easily charge your Quest 2 and its controllers by placing the devices on the dock. But how good is it? To ensure full transparency, Anker sent me a device for review for free, but as always, I never allow this to affect my ratings.
What’s in the box?
The Anchor Loading Dock for Oculus Quest 2 contains everything you need to get started with the dock. This means that it includes:
- Charging station for Quest 2 VR headset and controller (
- USB-C to USB-C cable
- USB-C charger
- Battery charging covers
- Magnetic USB-C headset connector
- Rechargeable AA batteries
How does it work?
In order to use the Anchor Loading Dock for Oculus Quest 2, there are a few things you need to do first. So let’s start preparing for the headset:
Headset
To set up your Oculus Quest 2 headset for use with the Anker All-In-One Charging Dock, you need to take the magnetic USB-C headset connector out of the box (it looks like a tiny little connector with a magnet) the end). Once you find it, all you need to do is plug it directly into the USB-C port on the left side of the Oculus Quest 2 headset. After you’ve done this, you’re good to go. Now all you have to do is make sure the Anker charging dock is plugged into an electrical outlet with a USB-C cable, and then plug your headset into the dock so it will be magnetically charged. The connector will follow the magnetic connector on the dock. Now we come to the controllers.
Controller
There’s a bit more setup to use the controllers with the Anker Charging Dock for Oculus Quest 2, but it’s still very easy. First you need to peel off the battery covers from each controller (it may take some force, but that’s fine, don’t destroy things) then replace the standard batteries with the new rechargeable AA batteries that Anker has provided. Be sure to read the manual to learn how to orient the batteries so that they can actually be charged using the dock. Basically, you just need to make sure that the silver metal part of the battery is facing straight up so it is making contact with the charging covers. After replacing the batteries, all you have to do is replace the battery covers with the charging covers provided by Anker and you’re good to go! Just plug these babies into the Anker Charging Dock and make sure they work.
To verify that the dock is working you should see a set of 3 LEDs under the headset dock. When you have docked all 3 devices, all 3 of these LEDs should be solid orange to indicate that they are charging. Solid green means they are fully charged. However, if you see blinking orange, it means something is wrong with the respective devices.
Is it worth it?
The Anker All-In-One Charging Dock for Oculus Quest 2 will set you back a pretty solid $ 87 (excluding taxes and / or shipping). So is it worth the nearly $ 100 price tag? If you’re looking for a convenient way to charge your headset yourself, then it’s probably best to wall-mount it. What I like the most about this dock is that you can use it to charge the controllers as well. I can’t tell you the number of times I’ve tried opening the battery covers on the Oculus controllers just to change the batteries, and removing the batteries was still an even bigger struggle. For this reason I love the Anker All-In-One charging dock for the Oculus Quest 2, as it not only means you never have to change your batteries again, but also allows you to set up your controllers when you are not using them. Without this dock, I’d just put them on my desk or floor and let them roll around endlessly. The dock claims to fully charge your Quest 2 headset and controllers in just 2.5 hours. However, if you leave it on the dock while not playing, you should honestly not run out of battery at all. I left my headset and controllers in this dock for a couple of days (the dock has overcharge protection so that’s fine) but when I picked it up again the headset was 100% accumulated but the controllers were both to 90%. I’m not sure if this is a visual glitch or if the controllers don’t fully charge after a few days, but when it does it doesn’t really seem like it’s doing its job. Granted, it’s only 10%, it’s still not 100% as it should be.
I wish Anker only had the option to build the Quest 2 headset into the dock from either side. Right now, you can’t just take the headset off and put it on the dock. You’ll need to flip it over so the charging port is on the right. It’s not the biggest business, but it would have been nice to have the opportunity to work either way. I would definitely recommend this dock if you are looking for a convenient way to charge your Quest 2 headset and its controllers in particular, or if you just want a nice looking display to charge your Quest 2 controllers on. If you have the money to spend I would definitely say go for it, but this is also a pretty tough buy for most consumers. So if you’re not keen to spend that much bucks on a dock, buying it isn’t an absolute necessity – it’s just very nice to have. If you decide to buy it, this is where you can do it!
