They’re on every Christmas shopping list: gift cards. Gift cards are about convenience that is more stylish than just cash. They’re available in umpteen different stores, they’re waiting for you at the checkout, and you don’t have to worry about fit or fashion, or maybe even that hard-to-please relative. They’re great for kids, students, coworkers, in-laws, and pretty much everyone else.
Including scammers. They will come after you with a compelling game of how to buy gift cards to pay fines, fees, taxes, or to help someone in need. The FTC says consumers have lost more than $ 245 million to gift card fraud since 2018, but it’s likely a lot more than that. CNET’s Ian Sherr has spoken to people who have fallen for these scams and has advice on how to how to recognize the dangers.
