The Oculus Quest 2 has been the best value for money so far when it comes to VR gaming. It has phenomenal tracking, does not have to be connected to a PC and has a huge game library. It’s also the best VR headset to buy if you want to get into Beat Saber, one of the best VR games out there (as well as a fantastic exercise device). The main reason to jump on the VR bandwagon with a Quest 2, however, is the fact that it’s hundreds of dollars cheaper than its competitors. Quest 2 typically starts at $ 299.99. Oculus recently doubled the storage space on the base model (from 64GB to 128GB) and for a limited time they made the deal even more sweeter when you buy two.

Personally, I own the Oculus Quest 2 specifically for Beat Saber. I bought the original Rift CV1 headset in 2016 and have clocked 400 hours on Beat Saber since then. As a gamer who values the fidelity and ergonomics of the controller above all else, I firmly believed that nothing could compete with the Rift’s 3-sensor setup. Because of this, I skipped the Rift S and the original quest. Vive, Index and Reverb G2 were just too expensive for me because I actually only play Beat Saber and little else (except Half-Life Alyx, which is an exceptional game). When Quest 2 came out I was happy with my Rift, but I was fascinated by the price. I bought it expecting to be disappointed but I was wrong.

In my opinion, the Quest 2 has superior tracking over my Rift 3 sensor setup. While I was able to get at least an “S” on every song on the Beat Saber official setlist (including all DLCs) on the Rift in Expert +, I was able to get an “SS” and / or station wagon most of them on Quest 2. If you’ve played Beat Saber for a while, you probably know that the official setlist is very limited and you want to download the thousands of modified songs that are available on the internet. I bought the Oculus Link cable so I could play all of my modified songs that I have accumulated over the years (I have almost 1,000 songs downloaded). From now on it works perfectly with the full native Quest 2 resolution, 90 Hz refresh rate and without noticeable delay. It also allows me to play my Rift copy of Beat Saber without having to purchase a separate copy for the Quest 2. Nowadays I only play in PCVR mode.

The Quest 2 and controllers are definitely heavier than the original Rift and Touch controllers, but I got over that after a few days. To be completely honest, buying a VR headset to essentially play a game is still an expensive endeavor. In my defense, it was and still is my preferred form of training. I’m a pretty lazy guy when it comes to sports, and I’ve tried to break that habit by getting myself some home equipment like a pair of adjustable dumbbells, a power tower, and a fancy rowing machine, but Beat Saber is real the only right form of training that I keep coming back to. So if you’re like me and are looking for a VR headset made specifically for Beat Saber, I don’t think any other headset would be an option.
