Eight Issues You Should Do When You First Get an Oculus Quest 2
If you saved up and bought an Oculus Quest 2, congratulations! It’s no small purchase and trying out VR for the first time is such a cool experience.
It can be a little overwhelming figuring out where to start exploring a new console. You need to learn a new user interface, figure out what games to play, and just get used to the controls.
Check out these eight different ideas on what to do when you get your Oculus Quest 2 for the first time.
1. Set up your VR area
Think about where you want to use your VR and set up a designated area. Most of the time, it will remember your previous boundary and when you find yourself in a new location, you can just get started without having to redraw your boundary.
When deciding where to use your Oculus Quest 2, think about rooms in your home that are already fairly open. If you can’t think of anything in particular, think of a room where you can easily move furniture out of the way, such as a bathroom. B. to push a coffee table in the living room against a wall.
They really don’t take up a lot of space, but it’s always safer and more fun to have a bigger, open space to play with.
2. Play the free demos that Oculus has to offer
Oculus has developed its own little demo game so that you can familiarize yourself with your new VR headset and controllers. With on-screen instructions as you hold your hand through many basic activities, First Steps for Quest 2 is the perfect first game to play.
It’s not actually a game in the sense that it has no other purpose than learning to control Oculus Quest 2. There’s no need to complete missions or kill enemies. Just having fun.
Oculus has two other free games that demonstrate VR controls: Oculus First Contact and First Steps.
3. Check out the Quest Store
Spend some time browsing the games in the Quest Store. The first time you get an Oculus Quest 2, you won’t have many games. And while it will take a while to build an extensive game library, now is the time to create a wish list.
If you search for “free demo” in the Quest Store, you will also see some available demos. Try as many as you want to get a feel for the type of games you like for VR. Two notable demos to try are the one for Beat Saber and the one for Superhot.
4. Check out some free Oculus Quest 2 games
While there are plenty of free demos on the Quest Store, you can find even more through SideQuest. There are tons of free games or experiences that can be downloaded onto your Quest 2.
The free games are mixed up with paid games so be sure to target one.
5. Think about upgrading your Oculus Quest 2 accessories
You should also think about upgrading your Quest 2 with some accessories. Although the base console comes with everything you need to start playing, there are plenty of additional things you can buy to make your game more comfortable and enjoyable.
You can upgrade your controller grips or headband, replace your face cover with a silicone or padded option, or even bring a carrying case so you can travel with your VR. Then you should also have a lens cover and some microfiber cloths on hand to keep everything clean.
6. Watch YouTube Oculus Quest videos
A great way to see how cool your new VR headset is on YouTube. If you just go to the YouTube app and search for “Oculus Quest Videos” you will see a number of options to choose from.
There are roller coaster videos, a shark attack, National Geographic VR videos, and more. You can even visit the Krusty Krab virtually from SpongeBob SquarePants with a couple of different videos.
7. Watch something on Netflix
If you have a Netflix subscription, you need to try the Netflix app on your Oculus Quest 2. There’s an entire media room experience that makes watching something seem so luxurious in VR.
Watching 3D movies in the cinema is sometimes, or maybe most of the time, not the amazing experience you were hoping for. Watching movies in VR gives you that 3D feeling, but it makes it a lot better. There are actually 3D movies that you can watch through VR, but even watching a regular old movie or TV show is a great experience.
8. Learn how to stream your game
You can mainly use your VR headset on its own. However, it is worth knowing how to cast your screen to a phone, computer, or Chromecast in case you have friends or family that you want to share with you.
To stream to a phone, you must first download the Oculus app. Then with the headset on, press the Oculus button, select Share> Cast> Start. You should see a notification on your phone asking you to open the Oculus app and begin the transfer. If you’ve already opened the app, you can choose Start pouring from within the app.

Transferring it to a computer is just as easy. On the computer you want to stream to, go to the casting page on the Oculus website and sign in to your Oculus account. Put on your headset, press the Oculus button, and select Share> Cast> Computer> Next> Done.
Using Chromecast to share your cast can work two ways. The first process is like casting on a computer above; the only difference is that instead of choosing computer, you would choose the Chromecast device you want to stream to.
Or you can use the Oculus mobile app on your phone to stream to a Chromecast device. In the app, select the icon that looks like a VR headset and WiFi signal. Under Cast To, You can change it from This cell phone on the Chromecast device you want to use.
Have fun with your new Oculus Quest 2
