Starting at $299, the Oculus Quest 2 is the best standalone VR headset money can buy. Between the stylish yet comfortable aesthetics, innovative controllers, visually stunning specs, and massive library, it ushered in a revolution in interactive entertainment.

Beat Saber by Beat Game is the ultimate VR rhythm gaming experience, so much so that Meta has acquired the Czech developer and it’s easy to see why. Across multiple difficulty levels, players swing their glowing sabers to the rhythm of the diverse selection of licensed tracks. For greater difficulty, there’s even a 360-degree mode to tackle beats all around the player. Music features top charting artists like Lady Gaga, Billie Eilish and Timbaland, with new free and paid content being added regularly.

Pistol Whip is a unique on-rail shooter inspired by gun-heavy action movies like The Matrix and Equilibrium. Visually, the game utilizes that stylized polygonal look that has to be seen to be believed. Players blast their way through 28 different scenarios while dodging bullets to the beat of the high-energy soundtrack. Aside from being an absolutely insane experience, there is also a nice workout here. There’s also respectable replay value due to numerous gameplay modifiers and weapon types that can be unlocked through play.

FitXR, formerly called BOXVR, still offers various boxing exercises but has also expanded to include dancing and high-intensity training. All available exercises contain music from different genres from rock to hip-hop. To help players on their training journey, FitXR also has a phenomenal tracking system. Online multiplayer takes things to the next level just in case friends want to join in. FitXR users who want to have a fully realized workout will need a $9.99 monthly membership after the seven-day free trial expires. Those going the free route will be stuck with three tutorial classes for each gym, with HIIT classes planned for May.

Arizona Sunshine is a survival horror shooter with a quirky sense of humor, short yet action-packed. The game’s 25+ weapons feel great and the interactivity is well done. Most importantly, the multiplayer offerings are pretty decent. Not only can you play the entire campaign with friends in co-op, but there’s also a horde mode for up to four players. Despite being released in 2016, the game’s colorful visual style holds up despite some dated graphics.

More so than any other entry in the Resident Evil series, Resident Evil 4 set a near-unreachable standard in gaming upon its release in 2005. The story of Resident Evil 2 protagonist Leon Kennedy fighting to save the US President’s daughter from a mysterious cult is still a breathtaking experience. Though the game has been ported to many platforms from the Nintendo Wii to HD-generation consoles, the Oculus Quest 2 edition of Capcom’s survival-horror action title, with its first-person perspective and gameplay enhancements, feels like an opportunity finally moving, fresher than ever at shooting.

Eleven Table Tennis offers what publisher For Fun Labs calls the most realistic table tennis simulation the world has ever seen, and is simple in both execution and style. There are three settings for players to choose from including an apartment, a ski lodge, and an arena where players can set up games for single player or online multiplayer. Eleven Table Tennis VR includes mini-games like Wall Play and even has a Beer Pong mode. There’s something incredibly next-gen about playing beer pong with friends around the world.

Supernatural Fitness is one of the most popular fitness-based VR games available on Oculus Quest 2. Along with exercises similar to FitXR and Beat Saber, there’s also a nice focus on mental health through meditation training. It also helps when celebrities like comedian Tiffany Haddish praise the app on social media — and then end up guest coaching. There are over 500 workouts, with new ones added daily, and in-app fitness tracking for a subscription price that starts at $19 per month.

Superhot was considered one of the most imaginative first-person shooters when it was released in 2016. Since then it has reached other consoles and VR platforms. And the Oculus Quest is one of the best ways to play it because it’s tethered and allows for real freedom of movement. In a stylized polygonal world, players complete objectives until the round ends. The catch is that when players aren’t moving, time slows down – and you can be killed in one hit. This offers a puzzle-like element that is part action, part brain.

The Walking Dead: Saints and Sinners ($39.99;

One of the best Walking Dead games out there, The Walking Dead: Saints and Sinners is a premium single-player experience on the Oculus Quest 2. As a tourist (who can be male or female), players climb into the middle of a zombie -Break out in New Orleans and must fight your way out alongside other survivors. Not only does it offer an immersive story, but it also offers a great first-person shooter experience and a clever crafting system.

For nearly three decades, the Tetris series has evolved into the definitive match-the-brick puzzle game. Developed by the team behind audiovisual masterpieces like Rez Infinite and Lumines, Tetris Effect brings a similar immersive style to Tetris with several new features, including a zone mechanic that lets players freeze time to erase lines more easily. Since launch, the game has been updated to Tetris Effect: Connected, an improved version that adds cute co-op mode as well as competitive online multiplayer.

Star Wars always seemed perfect for a VR adaptation, and there have been several from Star Wars Pinball to Star Wars: Tales From the Galaxy’s Edge. One of the coolest, however, is the three-part Vader Immortal: A Star Wars VR Series. Written by acclaimed screenwriter David Goyer, this game lets players inhabit a Force-sensitive smuggler in a story set between the events of Revenge of the Sith and Rogue One. Each of the three episodes, available separately, allows players to wield Force powers, fire blasters and wield lightsabers to recover an ancient artifact for Darth Vader.

It’s safe to say that Five Nights at Freddy’s is one of the most successful indie games of this gaming era. The survival horror game not only spans multiple games on different platforms, novels and even a possible film adaptation, but is also about an employee who works nights at Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza. Players take moments from several games in the series and try to survive a night full of animatronic killer robots through various mini-games. Having to monitor security cameras and doors on the player’s side is one thing – doing it physically perfectly increases the tension.
