Steam {hardware} survey reveals that 33% of Steam VR customers are enjoying on Oculus Quest 2
Valve released its latest monthly Steam Hardware & Software survey yesterday. Among the detailed user statistics in the report, it emerged that the Oculus Quest 2 was the most popular VR headset on the platform, with nearly a third of all VR gamers on Steam opting for Facebook’s flagship VR headset. While this may come as a surprise when you consider that Valve’s own headset, the Index, was developed for Steam VR, the Oculus Quest 2 was a resounding commercial and critical success.
This puts the Oculus Quest 2 with around 1 million users on Steam alone and almost 500,000 Steam VR users above the second most popular headset on Steam VR, the Oculus Rift S and Valve’s VR headset, the Valve Index. Some reports from April estimate that the Quest 2 sold at least 5 million units, which means that more than a fifth of all Quest 2 users have their headset connected to their PC to play VR.

While 5 million units sold may seem like little potatoes alongside home console sales such as the PlayStation 4’s 115 million units sold, the Quest 2 has been incredibly successful compared to other VR headsets. In fact, for the first six months in the market, it outperformed lifetime sales of other popular VR headsets.
Unfortunately, if you want to join the millions of people who already have a Quest 2, you’re out of luck for now. Last week, Facebook announced that Quest 2 would be ceasing sales due to reports of skin irritation from the foam on the headgear. At the moment, Facebook says they are working on a new model with a silicone case to avoid the same problem in the future.
