Oculus Quest 2 preorders ‘outpaced the unique Quest by greater than 5 instances’
According to Facebook, pre-orders for Oculus Quest 2 VR headsets were five times the original Quest. During the company’s third quarter conference call (via UploadVR), CEO Mark Zuckerberg revealed the popularity of the company’s newest standalone virtual reality device.
“We launched Quest 2,” Zuckerberg said during the call (via Seeking Alpha), “our most advanced virtual reality headset, just in time for the holidays. It gives a real sense of presence, like being right there with someone else or in a different place, and we’ve worked to make it accessible to more people.
“It’s lighter, faster, has a sharper screen, and is priced at just $ 300. The pre-orders exceeded the original Quest pre-orders by more than five times and exceeded our expectations.”
The Quest 2 headset was not without controversy, however. Just before the release, Facebook announced it would need a Facebook account to log into the Oculus service and access the device. The decision means Quest 2 is no longer an option for those who kept Facebook at bay.
Researchers are already working on bypassing the login, and some have already done it.
Despite the impact that may have had on sales of the standalone VR headset, Facebook said the headset is selling “above our expectations.” The headset costs $ 299 (for the 64GB model), making it far cheaper than competing options, many of which require a fairly powerful gaming PC to run.
That said, we love these wired headsets just as much, and check out our guide for recommendations for the best VR headsets and why.
