Oculus Quest 2 hand monitoring simply obtained an enormous improve

Hand tracking is one of the really nifty things you can do with an Oculus Quest 2, but if it’s inconsistent, you probably won’t stick with it for too long. That could change only marginally today as developers start implementing a brand new higher fidelity tracking mode that Facebook just launched that improves hand tracking from 30Hz to 60Hz. UploadVR noticed the change posted on the Oculus Developers Blog that includes instructions for developers who want to implement this new hand tracking method for upgrades in their games and apps.

Some of the originally best hand tracking apps and games were great fun, but ultimately feel more like demos than final products. This is because the previous hand tracking method at 30Hz – which is the number of times a camera updates the image per second – caused reasonable latency and it was difficult to accurately track hands when they were moving quickly. The new 60Hz mode isn’t quite capable of tracking twice as fast despite the numbers, but Facebook says it means an improvement in overall accuracy of at least 10%.

However, there are some interesting limitations associated with this new upgrade. Just like the April v28 Quest 2 update that allows 120Hz support when apps require it, this new hand-tracking mode will only be enabled when developers swap out the original code to bring this new “high” fidelity to life. Enter tracking mode. As part of this upgrade, Facebook had to limit how much hand-tracking apps and games the CPU and GPU can use in Quest 2. While the low fidelity mode may require a maximum CPU level 3 and a maximum GPU level 3, this is level 3 of 5 as a reference – the high fidelity mode is limited to CPU level 3 and GPU level 2 .

This means that developers who require higher fidelity tracking need to ensure that their apps and games continue to function smoothly with the reduced number of available resources. Currently, Oculus’ own free hand tracking demos, Tiny Castles and First Steps, have been updated with the new features. Hand Physics Lab, a $ 10 quest game, has also been updated with the new tracking method. If you have any of these games installed on your Quest 2, look for more developers to implement this soon and give it a try yourself!

The Oculus Link cable is hands down the best way to play SteamVR and Oculus Rift games on the Oculus Quest 2, but it costs almost $ 80. There are alternative cables out there that cost far less on the same benchmarks, but some of the ones you find on Amazon cannot be trusted. Here are the ones that you should try first.
