Oculus Quest 2 Digital Actuality Headset Insert Recall

Facebook has recalled the foam tray on its popular Oculus Quest 2 virtual reality headset, according to the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), the federal agency that oversees the safety of most household products. The announcement comes after thousands of consumer complaints that the headset causes rashes and other skin irritations on the face.

Kelly Crothers of San Diego told Consumer Reports that she noticed a problem shortly after purchasing an Oculus Quest 2 for her son in March. “The irritation is extreme swelling and redness,” she told the company in April, describing her son’s face. “That’s pretty ridiculous,” she added.

Similar comments have spiked Facebook, Reddit, and YouTube in the last few months following the $ 299 virtual reality headset release in October 2020. These complaints all say roughly the same thing: that using the Quest 2 for even a few minutes will result in redness, swelling, or other irritation.

“My eyes are puffy, I have a rash where the headset sits, itchy and painful,” wrote another user, Mitchell Brown, on Facebook. “It might not be an allergic reaction, but it shouldn’t have happened to anyone.”

“What started as a small itch has now and then turned into severe itching, redness and now puffy eyes,” said Christine Ann, also on Facebook. “I am undoubtedly sensitive to some component of it.”
