Using Quest 2 in a common room can result in disaster if a person or pet unexpectedly joins your guardian circle. Fortunately, Meta has developed Space Sense, a new detection system that makes people visible when they get too close. It’s an experimental, unpolished system that’s hard to find if you don’t know where to look. How to use Space Sense on the Oculus Quest 2.

How to activate Oculus Quest 2 Space Sense

Space Sense registers any person or object within your Guardian range from a distance of up to 2.74 meters, changing the color from blue to pink to red depending on how close the thing is. They appear as a colorful, caricature outline when you look in their direction that cannot be ignored. So even something small like a cat should be fully visible when the cameras pick it up.

Should you be using Space Sense for Quest 2?

The usefulness of Space Sense will depend on the size of your room and your tolerance for distractions. If you are playing in a small room with objects falling into your guardian, they will be visible all the time. However, since the cameras do not support high resolution, the outlined objects sway distractingly in the air; and you can’t change the sensitivity just to see objects right next to you.

You also won’t know if someone is showing up behind you, although we don’t hold that against a headset with only front-facing cameras.

Put simply, Space Sense works best when you have a dedicated VR room that people rarely invade, and on rare occasions protects you and others. Constantly looking at “felt” objects will take your immersion away from playing the best Quest 2 games.

Some games like Blaston include a Space Sense-like passthrough feature even if you’ve disabled Space Sense, but it’s not a common feature.

It will most likely work a lot better on the Oculus Quest Pro, which will supposedly come with better cameras for AR passthrough.

The Quest 2 remains a headset that works best when you have an isolated room where pets and humans are unlikely to appear. But if you live in a crowded household, you can activate multiple accounts on the Quest 2 and let your family and friends invest in VR.

The Oculus Link cable is hands down the best way to play SteamVR and Oculus Rift games on the Oculus Quest 2, but it costs almost $ 80. Alternative cables cost a lot less while hitting the same benchmarks, but some of the ones you find on Amazon cannot be trusted. Here are the ones that you should try first.
