Your model new Oculus Quest 2 can’t play Oculus Go video games, John Carmack confirms

If you’ve bought a new Oculus Quest 2 in hopes of experiencing games from the now-discontinued Oculus Go, I have bad news: the company has decided not to add support for Go titles to the Quest 2, confirms Oculus’ advisory service CTO John Carmack on Twitter.

When Oculus Quest 2 launched three days ago, some people noticed that there was no feature on the user interface that would allow users to access Go apps and games. This was the original Quest headset. Carmack didn’t go into great detail as to why support wasn’t added except “[he] completely lost the internal debate about backward compatibility. “

The Oculus Go was discontinued in June, but last year Carmack tweeted that Oculus wanted to bring Go emulation to the Quest so that users could play games originally released on the Go on its then flagship virtual reality headset can. Not every app and game released on the Go was backwards compatible, but Quest owners had access to a decent library of titles released on Oculus’ first standalone headset, accessible through Quest’s user interface. However, production of the original Quest ended after Quest 2 was revealed in September.
