VR chat of the virtual world burst into mainstream consciousness with a steady stream of viral memes, but a few days ago VR chat residents were grappling with something far more real than swarming Knuckles avatars: a gamer who appears to be had a seizure in VR.

VR Chat is a social platform reminiscent of Second Life. It was downloaded over a million times in the past two weeks. In it are busty anime girls and wandering armies of henchmen, parrot memes and insults to one another via voice chat. Players can navigate VR chat with the mouse and keyboard or with the HTC Vive VR hardware.

On Wednesday, YouTuber Rogue Shadow VR released a video showing a more human side of VR Chat. In it stands a robot avatar between a giant Pokémon, Morty from Rick and Morty, a goblin, and other strange creatures. After a few seconds, the avatar collapses. His body spasms on the floor. Laborious breathing can be heard through voice chat. A group of gamers stand there, increasingly concerned, wondering if the operator of the robot, which was wearing motion tracking hardware, was having a seizure.

“I honestly don’t remember much of it,” said this robot, who didn’t want us to use his real name but to go from DrunkenUnicyclist, on the phone this afternoon. “I remember suddenly feeling cold. Then I woke up and lay on the floor. I could hear these voices. DrunkenUnicyclist added that he had a seizure in the past when he was five years old, although he says he doesn’t have epilepsy or any other illness that could have caused it.

After a long pause, DrunkenUnicyclist replied that he was fine. Suddenly the VR Chat community got serious. Everyone immediately urged him to drink water and call someone who could help. Some players urged DrunkenUnicyclist to see a doctor, even though DrunkenUnicyclist claims at the time of this writing that they have not seen a doctor. Someone said a Ugandan ankle Silence Avatar. When a fat man’s avatar in a diaper sits repeatedly on the robot, the players chastise him.

“Please stop, this is really very serious,” snapped one player.

“The whole community comes together to improve this person. Don’t be that one guy, ”Morty said, gesturing with his motion-tracked hands.

“It was comforting to know that someone was there after all was said and done,” said DrunkenUnicyclist. “It’s really amazing that people can come together like this when someone is in need. In a world where nobody really knows each other. ”
