The way to Cost Oculus Quest 2 Controllers

  • You cannot charge Quest 2 controllers directly, but you can use them with rechargeable batteries.
  • The controllers use disposable AA batteries by default, so you can replace the batteries when they run out.
  • The Anker charging station allows you to charge the Quest 2 and the batteries in the controllers at the same time.

The Oculus Quest 2 VR headset (now referred to simply as “Quest 2” under its parent company Meta) has a number of innovative features, not the least of which is hand tracking, which turns your bare hands into game controllers.

Hand tracking doesn’t work in every game, though, so Quest’s included controllers are usually a much more convenient way to use the system. Batteries tend to drain relatively quickly, so knowing how to keep them charged and ready for use is important.

How to charge Quest 2 controllers

Unfortunately, the Quest 2 controllers aren’t rechargeable in the sense that they’re each powered by a single disposable AA alkaline battery. There is no standard charging cable, charging station or rechargeable battery system for the controllers.

If the battery level is low, slide the battery cover off the controller. Look for the embossed arrow at the top of the cover – it’s very subtle, almost invisible – and slide the cover down in the direction of the arrow towards the bottom of the handle. It may not slide easily, and you may find it helpful to place your thumb on the embossed arrow and use it as leverage as you slide.

Once you remove the cover, remove and discard the old AA battery. Replace with a new battery and slide the cover back into place.

If you wish, you can replace the disposable batteries with rechargeable AA batteries, but you must remove these batteries and charge them outside of the controller when they run out. You can buy a set of AA rechargeable batteries and a charger cheaply.

Another option is to upgrade to an accessory like the Anker Charging Dock, which includes rechargeable batteries and spare battery covers for the controllers that keep the controllers charged when docked.

The Anker charging dock replaces the controller battery covers, allowing the rechargeable batteries to be continuously charged while docked.
