Oculus Quest 2 Unit Gross sales Fee Might Be Three Instances PSVR

While Facebook has not yet released official sales for the Oculus Quest 2, various data points the company offered along with data from developers have allowed us to make a reasonable estimate. Quest 2 may sell three times as fast compared to PSVR, the best-selling VR headset to date.

Thanks to PlayStation VR’s leading sales position, Sony has confidently reported official sales over the years, while other headset manufacturers have opted against it. The last data point the company reported was that PSVR had sales of 5 million units as of January 1, 2020. Here’s a look at the numbers over time:

Interestingly, both PlayStation VR and Quest 2 were released on October 13th (2016 and 2020, respectively), which gives us a very comparable schedule by eliminating the variable of seasonal differences in sales. If we could figure out the number of Quest 2 units sold so far, we could get a pretty good idea of how they hold up against PSVR’s sales rate.

While Oculus has not yet offered official sales for Quest 2, two data points can help us come up with a reasonable estimate.

First, Facebook said during its fourth quarter 2020 earnings call that Quest 2 was a primary driver behind its $ 885 million in non-advertising revenue in the fourth quarter (including the company’s Oculus and Portal hardware products). Using some conservative assumptions, we previously estimated that this would result in around 1 million Quest 2 units sold in the fourth quarter of 2020.

Second, based on their own internal data, Rec Room’s developers estimated that 2-3 million Quest 2 units were sold in the fourth quarter of 2020.

We’re now another quarter (three months) behind those estimates, which were between 1 and 3 million units. While more Quest 2 units have certainly been sold since then, sales are unlikely to have held the same pace in the first quarter of the year as the fourth quarter is most active thanks to the holiday season.

With that in mind, we can divide the difference between the estimates (2 million) and, for conservative reasons, assume that only 25% of Q4 2020 revenue was generated in the first quarter of 2021, so we get an estimate of 2,500,000 Quest 2 Units were sold through the 1st quarter of 2021.

How does that fit with the well-known sales of PSVR? Here’s a look:

Looking at the same data for “time to milestone” provides another specific way to compare the two:

Milestone of unity 1,000,000 2,000,000 2,500,000
Quest 2 (days to reach) 45 90 180
PSVR (days to reach) 137 420 549
Quest 2 Sales Rate relative to PSVR 3x 4.7x 3.1x

That puts the estimated total rate of Quest 2 sales with the launch schedules aligned at just over three times the PSVR rate.

This all mirrors Facebook’s claim that Quest 2 oversold all of the previous Oculus headsets combined, and the data shows that Quest 2 has even become the most popular VR headset on Steam.

This is not an assessment of which product is better. In fact, that’s what we’d expect – that in the four and a half years since PSVR launched, VR has generally become more popular, hardware has been improved, prices have fallen, and content has gotten better, which paves the way for newer ones Headsets to be more successful and widespread.

That said, we look forward to seeing how Sony’s PSVR 2 holds up with all the advancements since the original and how it rivals Oculus’ Quest line.
