Oculus Quest 2 Experimental 120Hz Help Probably Occurring In March
Oculus Quest 2 will almost certainly get support for the 120 Hz refresh rate in a future update. It’s just a matter of when (via TechRadar). Andrew Bosworth, Vice President of Facebook Reality Labs, confirmed this by giving a thumbs-up response to a question during an Instagram Q&A on whether or not Quest 2 will get the 120Hz upgrade.
UploadVR then discovered a 120Hz update support section in the Quest Platform Roadmap, a guide available to Quest developer accounts. It’s marked as experimental, and while the feature’s target release date is listed as March 2021, Oculus has added a medium confidence tag to the section. This means there can be a delay and it is uncertain when exactly Quest 2 users will be able to test 120 Hz on the headset.
@ID_AA_Carmack Given the new 120 Hz update, how confident are you that Quest games can run at 120 fps?

Only some existing games will be optimized for 120, but some new titles will consider this an option in their design phase.

John Carmack, consulting CTO of Oculus VR, confirmed on Twitter that only some existing games will be modified for 120 Hz and new titles may “consider this an option in their design phase”.
From Quest 2’s start update rate of 72 Hz, 120 Hz means a not so insignificant increase in the headset’s update rate. Meanwhile, Quest 2 also got support for 90 Hz in November 2020. A higher refresh rate allows for smoother and smoother graphics, resulting in a more immersive virtual environment.
Mark Zuckerberg described Quest 2 as “on track to be the first mainstream virtual reality headset” during Facebook’s fourth quarter 2020 earnings call, citing strong Quest 2 Christmas sales.
In GameSpot’s Quest 2 review, Mat Paget praised the new device as a big improvement over Quest 1. He commented, “It doesn’t fit the best VR-enabled PCs, but it can still keep up with them on the Internet.” Experience that it offers, largely thanks to the wireless freedom that it grants to its user. “
