Oculus Quest 2 120Hz Refresh Charge Slated for March – VRFocus

Facebook rolled out the updates for the Oculus Quest platform, adding new voice commands, multi-user accounts, and app sharing to name a few. According to its roadmap for the platform, it looks like experimental support for a 120Hz update mode may be available this month.

The mode’s existence was first spiced up by Andrew Bosworth, head of Facebook Reality Labs, in one of his regular Q&A sessions on Instagram. Now the feature has been released via Oculus’ developer roadmap, which shows a “medium” probability for a 120 Hz refresh rate in March. This only applies to the Oculus Quest 2 headset.

120Hz support will initially be made available in the Experimental Features section so that users can enable and toggle the mode for apps that support it. How many developers plan to do this remains to be seen as not all apps may be able to. This is entirely due to the processing power required to run the Oculus Quest 2 screens at the higher rate. The feature could also have a dramatic impact on battery life.

These apps, which can run at 120 Hz, offer an even smoother gaming experience compared to Oculus Quest 2’s original 72 Hz mode and the newer 90 Hz support. Native support for the latter came in November 2020, and a growing number of titles supported the feature. These now include Down the Rabbit Hole, Superhot VR, and Beat Saber.

Oculus Quest 2

There’s a good chance Oculus will roll out the feature in March as it continues with monthly updates. John Carmack, CTO for Oculus, previously said the company is aiming for “monthly software releases” and nothing else has been mentioned at the moment. Also, don’t forget the Oculus UserVoice Channel, where you can submit ideas and suggestions while you vote on others.

VRFocus will continue to report on the latest Oculus Quest 2 features and will come back with further updates.
