Oculus Quest 2 120Hz improve delayed to Q2 2021

We recently reported that the Oculus Quest 2 has an upcoming display upgrade in the works that would increase the refresh rate to 90 Hz and, soon after, to 120 Hz. And the long-awaited update may drop in late March.

With the update gods being as capricious as they often are, we now hear that the update of the 120 Hz refresh rate won’t be available until the second quarter of 2021. This comes from a Facebook post on the Oculus Platform Roadmap, which is only available to individuals with a developer account.

Confidence that we will even receive the update in Q2 is low, as the Oculus team stated that “delivering a refresh rate of 120Hz in mobile VR experiences is very difficult,” and as we previously reported, is one the main problem is the impact of 120 Hz on battery life.

Just last week, Facebook’s John Carmack noted that “few” existing games could add what will initially appear as an experimental element. “While the move to 90 Hz is ongoing and will make the VR experience smoother and more realistic, 120 Hz would take the user experience to a completely different level.

The hardware requirements and battery life claimed by 120 Hz support must be considered before such an advancement is published. However, a refresh rate of 90 Hz is considered a balance point for best visual performance and hardware optimization.

Achieving 120 Hz performance is difficult to manage for some current gaming computers. Even Sony’s PSVR headset can only output it using re-projection for games that really run at 60Hz.
