I purchased an Oculus Quest 2 as an alternative of the PS5 — and I’ve no regrets

I’ve been queuing for a PS5 for almost a year, with no success on the various PS5 refills. So my partner and I decided to just stick with our good ol ‘Xbox One. That was unfortunately over when our cat tipped it off the shelf and broke it. We had to buy something to replace it and that’s when we came across the Oculus Quest 2.

You might think it’s a strange alternative, but that’s exactly what interested us. I’ve never tried VR before but the idea of diving into the games sounded great. If you compare the price, at $ 299, the Oculus Quest 2 is way cheaper than the $ 499 for PS5, so we took a chance and bought one. We learned a lot in just a few weeks.

Oculus Quest 2’s fit and comfort

First of all, the Oculus Quest 2’s straps are fiddly to find the right fit on your head. There’s a strap with Velcro, but the other two that go around the head are more cumbersome to thread and switch. It’s fine if only you play on the console because once you’ve set it up, it’s safe and you don’t have to watch it again. But if more than one of you is using it, it becomes a hassle.

As soon as the Oculus Quest 2 is properly seated, it hugs the face and feels comfortable. Previously there were complaints of rashes from the foam interface; However, our model came with the silicone case that was issued to resolve this issue. After using the Oculus Quest 2 several times, none of us showed any skin irritation. The only criticism of the fit was that when I looked at my nose I could still see out through a small gap.

At 1.1 pounds, the Quest 2 headset is pretty light, though it takes some getting used to. My partner didn’t notice it anymore, but I still feel it when I start a new session.

A small but important point is the storage of this console. It’s a cumbersome shape, and with two controllers you’ll have to empty a drawer as it doesn’t look good on the display. You can buy a case separately, but one should really be included to protect it from damage.

Oculus Quest 2 Games and Experience

We bought a wide variety of apps to see what the Oculus Quest 2 can really do. I checked out some of the virtual videos on Jurassic World and loved that you could literally look around 360 degrees and see hidden details. When the dinosaurs approach you and rear up, it really stimulates your imagination and feels like you are with them.

We also tried Zombieland: Headshot Fever, which turned out to be my partner’s favorite game. Once you master the controls – releasing the clips and reloading from your harness – while using two weapons at the same time, the gameplay becomes much more exciting. Another game we especially liked was Death Lap, which is where you can race, drift and destroy other drivers.

The only game we weren’t too excited about was Warplanes WW1 Fighters. While the simulation looked amazing and the controls were spot on, each of us got sick pretty quickly. I could only manage about 10 minutes of playtime while my partner had to take off the headset almost immediately. That’s not to say that some of the games don’t compensate if you’re dealing with motion sickness. In some, there are options to choose a more relaxed game that won’t blow you away.

Let’s get to the sound – it’s very impressive on the Oculus Quest 2. It’s loud, crisp, and you don’t need headphones to enhance the experience. You can really hear every detail from the chirping of birds to the rustling of the wind through the bushes. However, there is a headphone jack if you are bothering others with the noise.

Oculus Quest 2 battery life

A full charge of the Oculus Quest 2 gives you 2-3 hours of battery life, which doesn’t sound like a lot, but I wouldn’t recommend playing it for much longer in a single session as it will begin to work on your eyes.

The only downside to this battery life is that if you have more than one of them you can’t use them back – not very long anyway. If you run out of battery life while gaming, there isn’t much of a warning either. It flashes that there is about five minutes left and that’s it. It could use more warnings.

Oculus Quest 2 verdict

In summary, we are satisfied with our purchase of Oculus Quest 2. Of course, it’s very different from a PS5, but it’s a whole new, immersive experience that we’re happy to offer upon request. You can’t play on it for as long as you can on a traditional console, but you feel much more involved.

The only downside is that the Quest 2 isn’t easy to share. The constant adjustment of the straps and the relatively short battery life make this impractical. However, you can buy a second headset to solve this, which we may do now. We can then play the same games together at the same time. even. Otherwise, you may feel a little antisocial when others are in the room.

I still want a PS5 admittedly, I won’t deny that, but that’s more than enough to keep me entertained for now. We couldn’t be more pleased with the quality of the games and our overall experience with this headset.
