HTC Vive teaser revealed — Oculus Quest 2 rival on the best way?

Do you remember Project Proton, the HTC headset that the company talked about a year ago? It could be closer to the start than we thought if a company tweet is a clue.

HTC’s Vive Twitter account posted a close-up of a black, matte surface with a glossy, matching emblem of the Vive logo. The tweet itself read “It’s your turn.”

That’s all there is left to do now, but it’s certainly enough to spark speculation among potential buyers about an obvious upcoming reveal. HTC has been relatively cautious since introducing the HTC Vive Cosmos and Vive Cosmos Elite in 2020, and now another product appears to be preparing to debut.

Around the recent tweet about users’ next “move” are gifs from the Dragon Ball Z anime series asking readers what they would do with more energy. Another recent post encourages the community to share their dance skills with VR dance clips. These might be too insane to mean something, but it’s possible that this new product, if there is one, is about fluidity and movement.

What we know about Project Proton

Right now, we know little about what the HTC Vive might have in store, except for the now-scrapped Cosmos Play, a cheaper version of its Cosmos line, or the smaller, more compact Project Proton.

We heard about Project Proton in early 2020 when CEO Yves Maitre described the lightweight new headset as “really, really close to normal glasses”. At the time, Engadget was sharing renders that seemed to suggest this type of build, with a decidedly compact look that supposedly could be used for more than VR interfaces – it could also be a great alternative for AR glasses, not to mention a rival to the Oculus Quest standalone headset.

The first Project Proton rendering was reminiscent of every old VR headset we’ve seen on the market, but the second looked more like goggles than a typical VR device. Unfortunately, there was very little (if any) information about what HTC could go for next, other than these brief glimpses of what might be around the corner.

There’s no date for a reveal or event to anticipate HTC’s teaser tweet. It is clear, however, that HTC wants to take a step, and we will keep our eyes open to see what comes next.
