1-In-Four VR Headsets Used On Steam Are Oculus Quest 2

Every fourth VR headset used on Steam is an Oculus Quest 2, according to the platform’s latest hardware survey.

The figures for March are available. Facebook’s standalone headset jumps to 24.25% of total VR headset usage on Steam. That’s a 1.34% increase over last month and means the new headset is just under a quarter of all VR usage on Valve’s gaming platform. Last month, Quest 2 was also named the Most Used Headset by Steam.

Valve’s own Index headset also expanded its user base slightly in March, accounting for 16.37% of headsets, while the use of older devices such as the Oculus Rift, Rift S, Quest, and HTC Vive shrank slightly. Overall, Facebook headsets accounted for 58.07% of total VR headset usage on Steam, another slight increase from 58% last month. Interestingly, more people used an Oculus Rift DK1 (0.03%) than a DK2 (0.02%). These people are in dire need of an upgrade.

HTC stays slightly ahead of Valve with 16.51% of the share if you add up the original Vive, Vive Pro, Vive Cosmos and Vive Cosmos Elite.

Steam Hardware Survey March 2021 pie chart

It’s not surprising that Quest 2 continues to gain ground as it’s the newest headset on the list (aside from the HP Reverb G2, which is lumped into the Windows category) and is significantly cheaper than the base model at $ 299 all other offers. With no major new PC VR headsets in sight (at least the ones announced), this trend looks set to continue for a while.

Another little interesting statistic, earlier this week we reported on Facebook’s claims that Quest 2 had oversold every other Oculus headset combined. Add up all of the other Oculus headsets this month and you get 33.82%, so still way ahead of Quest 2. But obviously, Quest is primarily a standalone headset, and most of them are highly unlikely to be high- Gaming PCs are connected at the end.

As always, remember that the Steam Hardware Survey is offered to a random sample of the Steam user base each month. If they accept, their PC specs will be uploaded along with the SteamVR log of all headsets connected in the past month. So it’s not a definitive indicator of where PC VR market share is, but given that Facebook, HTC, and Valve have never shared solid sales stats for their headsets, it’s the best we have.
